Scoliosis is a 3D deformity of the spine which causes deformity in the coronal, sagittal and transverse plane. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common cause of scoliosis and is usually seen in school going children older than 10 years.
Scoliosis is usually noticed by parents when they find that both shoulders are not at the same level. The deformity makes one shoulder more prominent than the other. A spine surgeon then examines the child and orders an X-ray.
After clinico-radiological assessment, a spine surgeon decides whether the patient needs bracing and conservative management or spinal fusion surgery. Most patients are able to live a long and healthy life after scoliosis correction surgery.
